Brevettato dai fratelli Lumière nel 1903, Autochrome ha prodotto una trasparenza del colore utilizzando uno strato di chicchi di fecola di patate tinti di rosso, verde e blu, insieme a un complesso processo di sviluppo.
Gli autocromi richiedevano tempi di esposizione più lunghi rispetto alle tradizionali foto in bianco e nero, risultando in immagini con un'atmosfera offuscata e sfocata piena di punti di colore pointillist.
